RAINY & GRAY DAY THINGS TO DO

Life on the quietside of Mount Desert Island doesn't stop on rainy days. Of course, it's possible to relax on a sunny day, but rain and fog seem to help settle restless souls more easily. Sleeping late, breakfast with an extra cup of warm brew, and/or curling up with a good read will definitely pay dividends when you get back home.

But there are people here to help you add memorable experiences to a rainy or foggy day. Places on our side of the Island are especially renowned all over the country: The Mount Desert Oceanarium, The Gilley Museum, Clark Point Gallery and the Seal Cove Auto Museum (see each under the Museum and Galleries section). Visitors come away from these places, all indoors, with a very pleasant appreciation for the creation around us and the skills of people who can craft such beautiful objects. Even including a nap in your schedule as well as a special lunch of chowder or other local seafood, will still leave you time for a leisurely learning experience at more than one of these places. And the Oceanarium and the Gilley Museum each have museum shops to look through.

Speaking of shops, the center of town of Southwest Harbor offers a pleasing variety - from a number of fun shops with a surprising range of things for sale to a warm and friendly, newly expanded library. You might just discover the perfect purchase to remind you and/or your friends of your outstanding stay in Maine.

Acadia National Park Visitor Center, located on Route 3 in Hulls Cove, shows a 15 minute film every half hour giving naturalist walks information. The best time to visit to avoid crowds is before 10 a.m. and after 2 p.m. Acadia National Park Nature Center (opening mid-June) on the Park Loop Road at Sieur de Monts, features walk-around taxidermy exhibits, wall displays, and resource area for identification of plants and animals. Abbe Museum and Wild Gardens of Acadia are also located there. Jackson Laboratory, located on Route 3 in Bar Harbor, has a summer visitor program, free to the public. Call 288-3371. MDI Biological Laboratory offers public tours during the summer. Located in Salisbury Cove, off Route 3. Call 288-3605.
